They say we slow down with age, but my experience says we get WISER about recovery, nutrition, and mindset. 💪🧠

Wow what a day Boston! I seriously couldn’t have asked for more. 💛💙

Official time: 3:17:56! 🦄

My sub-3:20 marathon goal realized. A 13 min 34 sec course record and a 4 min 33 sec personal best. 🥇

From the start I watched as the time ticked by, dialing in my target pace, pleasantly surprised at how effortless it felt, wondering in the back of my mind when the other shoe would drop.

As wave 1 engulfed me around mile 4, I could feel the energy rise and somehow the pace just kept feeling stronger. The Newtons hills came and went, so did Heartbreak hill and even as my quads started to mildly protest, I continued to feel stronger.

The final 3 mile stretch I felt nearly as good as I did at the start, gradually pushing the pace, fueled by the energy of the crowds, finishing strong at a 6:52 pace.

It was a beautiful day and perfect execution, but it took so much more than that. It took the incredible Boston crowds, screaming “Go Kelly” for 26.2 miles. It took the voice of an amazing coach @alex.viada, quietly reminding me to back off the pace when I was feeling so good flying down the first 15 miles. It took a new @ossur running blade gifted through @cafoundation set up with a great socket from @allcareoandp, a fresh pair of @hoka carbon racers from @tovarus_rex, all of the amazing connections I’ve been fortunate to have made through @achillesconnecticut and @achillesboston and @teambaa for making this event possible.

As I reflect on the day, I can’t help but continue to be inspired by all of the amazing para athletes who showed up and left it all on the course @mstockwell01 @tanyakhv @eodpopp @peter.keating7 @markocheseto and former competitors like Bob Hall, winner of the first wheelchair diviso in 1975. Thank you for inspiring me daily!

And now, up next I will be training for the @speedgoatmtnraces Speedgoat 50k. And perhaps another marathon? 🤔 Race ideas welcome! 🙏

The little things add up. About a year ago I ran a 5k PR in 22:41. That was running all out, literally leaving every ounce of speed and effort I had in me on the track.

Yesterday I went out at about 3/4 effort, holding back so I could save my legs for the marathon on Monday. And still ran a PR by 1 min 19 sec PR.

It’s not about the big things. It’s about the little things. It’s about showing up for yourself every day. Making choices that support your goals even if, in the moment, it would be easier to <insert easier choice> (ie sleep in, get take out, skip the run, stay out late, drink too much).

Half Marathon Recap: A Celebration of Resilience

Last Sunday I crossed the finish line at the Vero Beach half marathon, not just as an amputee, but as someone who has learned to embrace every challenge as an opportunity to grow stronger.

The miles weren’t easy. The heat, the humidity and the incessant wind were momentary reminders of the struggles I’ve faced, from being bullied as a kid to redefining what health and movement mean to me. But running has taught me that setbacks don’t define us—our resilience does.

As a a lifestyle and longevity doctor, I talk a lot about how movement is medicine. Today, I practiced what I preach. Training for this race wasn’t just about physical endurance but about nurturing a mindset of possibility. It was about showing myself—and others—that age, circumstances, and challenges don’t have to limit us.

Crossing the finish line, I felt gratitude for my body, my prosthetic leg that carried me through, and my community who cheered me on. This race wasn’t just about running—it was about celebrating what’s possible when we lean into growth, grit, and gratitude.

To my fellow runners, patients, and anyone doubting their potential: keep showing up for yourself. Whether it’s one step, one mile, or one day at a time, you are capable of more than you know.

Here’s to living boldly and proving that limitations are only in the mind. 💪

2024 was a year of embracing change- the ups and d

2024 was a year of embracing change- the ups and downs, the good, the bad. It was a time for deep trust, believing that there is always a way out, always a light at the end of the tunnel. It was a year that challenged me professionally, personally, emotionally, mentally, and physically. I packed a lifetime of lessons into last year and from them grew on a deeply personal and spiritual level. The lowest lows were balanced by some incredible highs. Watching the sun rise over a snow-capped Bryce canyon, experiencing the tranquility of glowworm caves in New Zealand, traveling back in time on the descent into Malta’s ancient Hypogeum. I explored and adventured through New England and Canada. I drove across the country, visited 7 national parks (27 total), won the Boston marathon (F T64), shattered my marathon goal twice (3:22:23), added another board certification to my CV (American Board of Lifestyle Medicine) and started as an assistant professor in medicine at Yale. Summing it up, I will remember the highs and learn from the lows and am starting off 2025 with a shift in focus, to finding more of what makes me happy.
